Lentinus edodes, also known as Shitake,has long been regarded as "Top Precious Deposit of the Forest". Its earliest recording in ancient Chinese books can be dated back to the Warring States Period. More than 800 years ago, Wu San,a peasant born in Qingyuan Longyan village,summarized and invented cultivating technique of Lentinus edodes "Chop Cuts Technique'"(Kan Hua Fa), then imparted it to folks in nearby counties of Qingyuan, Longquan and Jingning.
Since then, Wu San itiated the billiant history of cultivated Lentinus edodes in the world.

Due to the development of Lentinus edodes industry with the increasing number of growers,and due to the primal commercial consciousness in the society as well, people who lived on Lentinus edodes industry started to expand their businesses towards the outside. According to Town Records of Qingyuan in the years of Kangxi (Qing Dynaty), "people in the town of Qingyuan live on Lentinus edodes industry, the olds stayed home, while the youngs went out for Lentinus edodes cultivation". The footprints of growers could be found in more than 200 towns in 12 diferent provinces including Fujian, Jiangxi,Anhui, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Guizhou,Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan, which together cover nearly half of China's teritory.
